After enjoying a 25-year career as a registered nurse, Heather Pfeifer now eagerly follows a new career path as a freelance writer for Outlook Business Solutions.
Heather graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 1994. She began her professional nursing career as an evening charge nurse for a long-term care facility. After gaining some valuable nursing experience, Heather transitioned to acute care at a local hospital where she worked on the adult medical/surgical, pediatric and labor and delivery floors. Heather found shift work difficult to maintain after starting a family and as a result, accepted a position at an outpatient oncology clinic. She was intrigued by the challenge of putting emerging oncology research into practice from the start and found the deep bonds she developed with her patients deeply fulfilling.
In 2015, Heather noticed subtle changes in her vision that began to interfere with her ability to carry out her duties as a chemotherapy infusion nurse. She would later find out that both of her retinas were damaged as a result of a medication, leaving her with irreversible loss of visual acuity and scattered blind spots in her central vision. She was devastated to find that her vision loss prevented her from safely continuing her nursing career, and she ultimately resigned from the 13-year position she had proudly held as an oncology nurse.
Bewildered and unsure where to turn, Heather reached out to Outlook for assistance. From her first phone call, Heather knew she had found the support and validation she had been searching for, leaving her with an emerging sense of hope. During her first visit to Outlook, Heather learned about Outlook Business Solutions, where her hope blossomed into a plan to pursue freelance writing.
Heather has found healing through writing about her experience and hopes her insight inspires others whose lives have been affected by vision loss.
She proudly launched Outlook’s blog series, “The Way I See It,” with her first article as a professional writer. She looks forward to bringing her writing talents to other topics for clients of Outlook Business Solutions.
Heather also finds joy in being a loving wife to her husband, Michael, and a dedicated mother to her three beautiful daughters, Hannah, Emma and Olivia.
